Constitutional Convention
On Friday 24 February, Innisfail State College sent a team of four Year 12 students to attend the annual Constitutional Convention. This team consisted of Natalie Kneubuhler (our representative speaker), Jessica Saro, Travis Fahrenhorst-Jones and Tim Jeffs. Held at the Cairns Mayoral Chambers, this year saw a record 23 secondary schools and colleges in attendance.
Students were divided into states and territories and asked to consider whether to amend our Constitution to acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and to recognise the existence of Local Government. There is a real possibility that both these questions will be put to the Australian people by way of referenda so our students were most interested in the process.
A roving microphone gave all participants the chance to put forward the views to an audience of nearly 130 people. There was laughter and tears and a universal recognition of how important it is that opportunities such as this are made available to our young men and women.
