Overview

Australia needs enterprising individuals who can make discerning decisions about the development and use of technologies, develop solutions to complex challenges and contribute to sustainable patterns of living. Therefore, all young Australians should develop capacity for action and a critical appreciation of how technologies are developed and can contribute to societies.

The practical nature of the Technologies learning area engages students in critical and creative thinking including understanding interrelationships in systems when solving complex problems. The learning area’s systematic approach to experimentation, problem-solving, prototyping and evaluation instils in students the value of planning and reviewing processes to transform ideas into solutions.

Subjects Offered

Innisfail State College has a wide variety of Technology subjects on offer for all students from years 7-12. The junior and senior subject selection books provide further information on these subjects. These are linked to the right of the page.

Hospitality students learn about nutrition and making healthy choices, discovering where our food comes from and how to be more sustainable which includes gardening and producing our own resource. In senior school students have the opportunity to gain a Certificate II in Cookery. Senior students have previously won the Hospitality Student of the Year program run by the Business Liaison Association of Cairns and our junior students have placed in school cooking competition held in Cairns.

Industrial Technology is one of the most popular electives chosen in our school. Students get a chance to be creative with both wood and metal (and even with a little acrylic as well). Our students get to use both handheld and larger industrial machines while developing their workshop skills. In past years we have won at State level competitions for Furniture Making and at a regional level we have performed well in Cairns industrial technology competitions. Many of our students leave us at the end of year 12 and move into an apprenticeship due to their skills and hard work while with us in the Industrial Technologies department.

ECS-cropped.jpgOur Early Childhood Studies department continues to go from strength to strength. Innisfail State College is fortunate to have a childcare centre on site which allows students to engage with young children while practising their new skills. In recent years we won Student of the Year at the BLA awards night (2020 & 2021). Our latest addition to our program is the Early Years Big Day Out where we invite students in from Prep to Year 3, from our cluster primary schools, to come and join us for the day. There are army and fire trucks, community members reading stories and of course our students face painting, setting up obstacle courses and much more.
